This past archery season in Colorado, I took the biggest bull of my life. Then both of my boys followed it up with their largest bulls to date—all on our ranch. But honestly, the antlers weren’t the real win. The best part was being out there together, doing what we love on land we’ve built and managed as a family. That’s what ranch ownership is really about.

Owning land isn’t just acreage and boundaries—it’s a lifestyle. For us, it’s the time out there as a family, the projects we tackle together, and the memories tied to every improvement. Whether we’re fixing a water line, clearing timber to open up bedding areas, or planting food plots to improve habitat, we’re living out exactly what I tell my clients to do. Every project becomes a lesson, and every improvement is a shared accomplishment.

For me, ranch ownership builds credibility. When I talk with clients about the value of water projects, habitat work, or access improvements, I’m not speaking in theory. I’ve done it. I’ve seen the results, such as how a new solar well changes wildlife patterns or how a properly mulched ridge can turn into a favorite transition area for elk. Owning and improving my own ranch has given me firsthand knowledge that directly benefits the people I work with. I’m out there doing the same work they are, putting money, time, and effort into the land and seeing firsthand what pays off.

But beyond business, it’s about stewardship. Owning a ranch means taking responsibility for the land and the wildlife that depend on it. It’s about leaving it better than you found it. There is satisfaction in knowing that every fence fixed, every tank repaired, and every acre improved contributes to something lasting, something my boys can one day continue.
At the end of the day, a ranch is more than a lifestyle. It is both a solid investment and a calling. I spend as much time as I can out there, not just hunting, but managing, learning, and improving. It keeps me grounded, grateful, and motivated to keep getting better.
I don’t just sell ranches. I live what I preach. And that makes all the difference.
Stay tuned for future articles where I will dig into the real side of ranch ownership, including the wins, the failures, and everything in between. From water projects to habitat improvements, there is always something new to learn when you are working the land, and I look forward to sharing that journey with you.
