Property Description

Welcome to Pyrite Retreat at the top of the World! This one-of-a-kind custom home is located just 20 minutes from the ski resort town of Breckenridge, and just 5 minutes to the highest incorporated town in America; Alma! If you are looking for the quintessential high country Colorado home, this is most definitely it. Bordered by National Forest, Pyrite Retreat acts as a luxurious base camp for a lengthy list of recreational opportunities that Colorado is famous for, including, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, and camping. With 2,700 finished square feet, this custom full log home boasts vaulted ceilings, granite countertops, two master suites, stone covered fireplace, wood floors, and custom cabinets. In addition, there is a detached 3-car garage that currently stores a tractor, snowmobiles and 2nd-floor storage area. If that wasn't enough, Quartzville Creek runs the length of the property and provides crystal clear water to the wide variety of animals that frequent the property.

HISTORY

This home is located on the original Quartzville Townsite which dates back to the 1800's. In fact, you can find remnants of the miner's cabin where prospectors rested before heading out to strike it rich during the gold and silver rush. The independent Mining District District of Quartzville was established in 1861 to house miners who were working the quartz and silver lodes on the faces of Mt. Lincoln & Mt. Bross (two of Colorado's famous 14,000+ foot peaks). The Moose Mine near the summit of Mt. Bross, and the Russia Mine on Mt. Lincoln's eastside, were among the most profitable and largely responsible for the existence of Quartzville. By the late 1800's many of the mining camps became ghost towns as mineral production slowed.

LOCATION

Pyrite Retreat is only a few miles from the top of Hoosier Pass and the Continental Divide. The only way to fully appreciate the clean air, blue skies, and blanket of stars, is to stand here and take it all in. Since this property borders thousands of acres of National Forest, you'll be surrounded by crystal clear creeks, snow-capped mountains, and breathtaking vista after breathtaking vista. While you'll feel like your 100 miles from civilization, fear not, as the famous mountain towns of Breckenridge and Fairplay are easily within reach and provide all the shopping, eating, and all the retail therapy you can handle. If you are more interested in skiing than shopping, the ski resorts of Breckenridge, Keystone, Arapaho Basin, Copper Mountain, Vail, and Beaver Creek are all under an hour drive from the property. In addition, Pyrite Retreat is 2hrs from Denver and its International Airport.

CUSTOM HOME

This log home was purchased by the current owners in 1995. For nearly 12 years, it served as a vacation home and was visited for a long weekend every month as well as longer stays during the summer and winter holidays. During those years, the home received a new mudroom at the entrance (2005) with log accents, a new attached shed, and ultimately a 1,248 sqft addition in 2007. This addition included a new basement level, added storage, and a renovation of the kitchen, flooring, and much more. The final addition was the construction of the 3-car garage in 2009.

RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

While the close proximity to some of the best ski resorts in the world is well documented, this area is also famous for a host of additional recreational opportunities that make this part of Colorado so unique. Rarely can one walk out their back door and hike into the kind of wilderness that the adjoining Pike National Forest provides. Stretching from Breckenridge, to Leadville, to Buena Vista, exploring this vast area of public land will take years. Whether you choose to hike to a 14'er (or 3), put your 4-wheel drive jeep to the test, cast your line to trout that have never seen a fly, or chase trophy Bull Elk and Mule Deer, it's all within reach of your king size bed! In addition, a short drive will put you on the famous fishing waters of the South Platte, Blue River, Antero Reservoir, and countless high country lakes. Obviously, you won't have to go but a few feet from the front door to experience world-class snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and sledding! ;)
