Elk Mesa Ranch
Property Description
Elk Mesa Ranch is a 7,697-acre hunter's heaven located in the heart of southeastern Colorado. Tucked below Horseshoe Mesa's base along the Colorado/New Mexico border, this property boasts excellent hunting for multiple big game species that the area is well known for. The land itself has a lot of elevation change, which provides bedding area, ample feed, and numerous water sources. Even a +/- 3-acre pond that historically held trout could easily be stocked with fish again. With Trinidad located less than an hour to the west, staples and amenities aren't too far away.
HUNTING
This property is every hunter's best dream when it comes to a choice of game. Located in Big Game Unit 140, the elk are plentiful, and the area is well known for producing great bulls. If it's deer that you're looking for, several herds of muleys roam the acreage along with a good number of pronghorn. There's plenty of opportunity for quality bear and mountain lion hunting, and Merriam's turkeys make the top list for a well-rounded selection of animals to pursue.
THE LAND
Elk Mesa Ranch spreads across some of the most productive landscapes of southern Colorado. The northern portion of the property is high open prairie and buffalo and blue grama grasslands. At the same time, the southern end consists of hillsides, canyons, and draws covered in pinyon, cedar, oak brush, and dark timber, which provides excellent cover for wildlife year-round. Horseshoe Mesa sits on the southern border and tops out at almost 8800 feet in elevation. Several springs, seasonal creeks, and a large +/- 3-acre pond provide ample water to the property. The pond could be stocked, providing an excellent opportunity to do some casual fishing.
The property features both perimeter and pasture fencing with a solid two-track road infrastructure that provides easy access throughout the property.
There is a 640-acre state land lease (AG Lease #101161, AG Legacy Lease #46152) that adjoins Elk Mesa Ranch, which adds additional elbow room, and there is potential to add more acreage from an adjacent landowner.
A conservation easement unencumbers the property in an area that has a high value for conservation.

Trinidad has all the conveniences one would expect in a small town: shopping, restaurants, hotels, and even a small private airport. Raton, New Mexico, similar in size, also sits within 1-hour southwest, and a little further to the southeast is the quaint town of Dalhart, Texas.
Other outdoor and recreational activities include Trinidad Lake State Park, within an hour's drive, which houses an 800-acre reservoir just west of Trinidad. It allows fishing, hunting, camping, boating, and hiking.
Not only is Elk Mesa Ranch a hunter's dream sporting property, but it is also truly a solid investment with Colorado's booming front-range population and an influx of Texas and Oklahoma buyers.
